FALC Education presentation, Thursday  May 24th 2012, 7:30 p.m. at the Cary Art Center.

Dr. Kate Carroll will speak on textiles in the Chateau du Compiegne in France. Dr. Carroll is the Assistant Professor of Fashion at the College of Textiles at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. She is originally from Britain where she received her BA in in Art History from the University of Manchester. She completed her MA at Michigan State University and was awarded a Ph. D. in Clothing and Textiles from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Dr. Carroll has taught at E.C.U., Virginia Polytechnic and SCAD.

The Chateau du Compiegne is a royal residence built for King Louis XV and restored by Napoleon. It was one of the three seats of royal government, the others being Versailles and Fontainebleau. The result is an example of First French Empire style (1808-1810), though some traces of the earlier décor survive.  From 1856 on, Napoleon III and Eugénie made it their autumn residence, and redecorated some rooms in the Second Empire style.
